Mya + Pablo
April 30, 2022 / Cartagena, Columbia
Tell us a little more about the two of you!: Pablo and I met at Nomad's on a Wednesday evening when I met up with a friend for drinks. He sat next to me at the bar, I started talking to him, and we've been together ever since! We have been together just over 4 years. We got engaged on 12/12/2020. He proposed to me with a penguin ornament with a speech about how penguins mate for life. This is special to us because we exchange ornaments every year. For the most part I did most of the wedding planning, along with our planner, with Pablo supporting my vision and giving his suggestions where needed. We approached all "big" decisions together such as color schemes for flowers, menu, band, etc.
What was your vision for your wedding?: Since I even started thinking about weddings when I was younger I knew I always wanted a destination wedding. When I started thinking about Pablo and I's wedding, even before we were engaged, I knew I wanted to get married in Colombia since Pablo is Colombian. We chose Cartagena, Colombia because it is such a beautiful, historic, romantic city right on the coast of the Caribbean. As soon as we got engaged I already knew our venues, photographer, and wedding planner, thanks to previous research on Instagram and Pinterest - haha! The one thing we both agreed on was that we wanted a PARTY! We wanted our wedding to be something that nobody had ever experienced before. We love concerts, so live music was so important to us! Photography was also so important to us. When else would we be on vacation celebrating the best day of our lives with most of our family and friends who flew across the world for us?
Tell us all about your wedding dress!: I was SO nervous going into my dress shopping appointments! I knew what I wanted, but I was so nervous that dresses wouldn't fit me or I wouldn't look good in anything. I ended up having the best time at Strike! I went with my mom, sister, future MIL and future sister-in-laws and we had a luxe appointment - the drinks and macaroons made it even more special! The dress I chose was the second dress I tried on. I knew immediately that it was the one! I chose the Tara Latour Annie gown. My favorite part about it was that I was able to customize the neckline and straps. On my wedding day I didn't even want to take it off! I got so many compliments on it.
You planned and you planned, but how did the day ACTUALLY go?!: Our day was absolutely amazing! I couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. Our ceremony was a traditional Catholic ceremony at the most beautiful Cathedral in Cartagena. I was so nervous for it since I'm not Catholic, but the priest was so funny and calmed any nerves I had. After the ceremony, the real fun started! We had a parade walk us to the reception venue complete with dancers and musicians. Around midnight we had a "Hora Loca" where we surprised our guests with Carnival dancers and a pinata! I have never danced, laughed, or sweat so much in my life. My favorite moment of the day was my first look with Pablo. I loved having that special time with just us and seeing him immediately calmed me. During the ceremony, a wedding guest backed up while taking a picture near the altar and knocked over all of the Holy Water at the beginning of the ceremony - I could hardly stop laughing during it.
What is your best advice for future brides-to-be?: Enjoy the day and live in the moment! It is so cliché, and I heard it a million times, but it is so true! The day goes by SO fast and you will want to take in everything. All the small things that you are worried about or didn't get done do not matter - you are the only person there who even knows!
